A Journey into the Teaching Experience

A site maintained by teachers for teachers

Despite the fact that education usually takes time to make use of new technologies, podcasts are becoming very popular in schools, and have brought about several advantages. What actually is a podcast?  Basically it is a multimedia digital file being audio or videos which are uploaded on the Internet can be easily downloaded to a media player, mostly common being a PC.

Podcasts can be created by the educator, uploaded online and then the students can download it whenever it is convenient for him/her. The video can be paused, restarted and stopped at any time as the need might be. The more different ways and technologies used to give out information to the students, the more they get interested in the subject. To further motivate the students the teacher can, after becoming comfortable and at ease with podcasts, encourage the students to try them out for themselves..

The advantages of such technology are not only for the students but also for the teachers and for the student`s parents. By podcasts the students requirements are satisfied better and they are introduced to different learning styles. Furthermore, students who are absent can catch up with the rest of the class at any time at any place, thus being portable and efficient and it also gives room for multitasking such as going for a walk while listening to a podcast. Students with special needs such as visually impaired can benefit a lot from this method. If they find something difficult or could not understand they can replay and review it how many times they like without bothering anyone. Finally it is believed to be the best method of a presentation form.

I totally agree with this new type of communication and find it as a very useful and effective

method to be used in class. It is the perfect way for information to be directly communicated to

you, if being face to face with your teacher is not possible at the moment. Furthermore, I find them very convenient and easy to use with a very low cost compared to other types of

communication such as postage. Finally, it is an on demand technology where the listener listens to what he wants at the time which suits him best.

I totally agree with this article about the fact that technology is helping in the

paradigm shift which is taking place in education- away from the traditional top down approach to the approach where students are creating their own content and learning in the process.
