I have started using Netvibes very recently, and was positively surprised at its educative and efficient aspects. Having all information presented in a single page is surely of great comfort. I started to dashboard various topics one of which being about tools we as prospective teachers can use during the ICT/Computer Studies lessons, in order to enhance the students’ interest. When looking at different tools and application I came across what is becoming one of the “largest learning events in history”: the hour of code; a great way for students to learn computer science and basic programming principles.

Unfortunately, in some schools students are introduced to programming concepts and principles through the use of formal constructed languages such as Java. Having no previous knowledge on the topic and being so formal, it makes it difficult for students to start thinking critically and reason things out sequentially. From the comments of those who have tried it out, the hour of code can be considered as what is needed to help to inhibit such critical habits of the mind before one can start programming. It is a way where students learn programming concepts by playing games. “They are learning how things are created in a technological order and that is there world and their upcoming world”. And students love it! A video published two days ago shows how teachers from all around the world are joining together to help increase the numbers of students trying it out. The new aim is to reach 100 million students till December. Nowadays we are surrounded by technology and it is crucial that everyone gets to know how to use it.

    If a tool like this is used as an introduction to programming, then it probably would make the student more eager and excited for the lesson. If they were introduced directly to the code then they would probably be less interested to participate and experiment. However tools like this would develop the skills required by the students in a way that is enjoyable and productive.
