A Journey into the Teaching Experience

Keybr: for better typing skills

Keybr is an online resource where one can practice his or her typing skills. Keybr starts off from the typing of simple words so that the users will get used to the location of the keys on the keyboard. Users can continue practicing using the guided lessons which are available on the website. This means that there will be a defined key set of letters for the user to learn. As the person progresses, the key set will change. Alternatively the user may choose advanced mode where he or she may upload a piece of text to practice on. The site will also generate some statistics related to that session. These include the total time, the top speed reached, the average speed, etc. The site also provides these statistics in the form of charts and graphs and it also provides tracking across multiple sessions.

This website would be useful for students who are not comfortable with their typing skills and would like to improve. If the students are not confident in their typing they will take more time to accomplish certain tasks in class and at home. Therefore I think that this can be introduced to the students in the beginning so that students may have enough time to practice and improve.

Nowadays, kids start using technology from such a young age. Therefore, touch typing is a skill that in my opinion should be taught as early as possible in a person’s life as it will save a tremendous amount of time later on.

I found an interesting article about when it is the right time to teach keyboarding and how to teach it:

Agreeing with you and Bernice I also think that in this day and age it is fundamental for a person to know how to type. However, I believe that typing should be learnt and done in the correct way; and using such tools surely helps one to achieve this. The 2 major reasons for the need of being able to type correctly are:
    1. Related to health; to eliminate Repetitive Strain Injury resulting from the repetition of the same act without regular breaks.
    2. Related to business; as one may find difficulties in future careers if s/he lacks these skills. Providing such typing courses to employees are surely costly for employers hence they try to avoid it as much as possible.
